Are your students interested in drones and electric vehicles and the new jobs that go along with these technologies? Free instructional materials and resources from DriveOhio, an initiative of the Ohio Department of Transportation, have been added to Open Space. The DriveOhio content features seven hands-on lesson plans, eLearning modules, and a student ambassador program. The collection includes:
Also included is a K-12 Educator toolkit. This professional development toolkit for educators incorporates electric vehicles and advanced mobility topics into STEM and career exploration units linked to Ohio industry recognized credential (IRC) skills development.
Example Lessons
The Smart City Adventure lesson plan is a design challenge for any K-12 student. The lesson plan challenges students to reimagine their city to embrace new mobility technology, such as drones, electric vehicles, and automated vehicles. The Cardboard Vertiport Challenge allows students to learn, brainstorm, and design a “vertiport.” The "vertiport" can be used by drones and other electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, like the new Joby aircraft that will soon be manufactured in Dayton. Both lesson PDFs provide background information and resources for teachers and students. Steps and considerations for each phase of the design thinking process, discussion questions, and possible extensions are also included.
